THE BIG MAC: Photography- These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things…

You know how I mentioned I’ve got loads of photographs to share with you? well, here’s the first installment. Since starting my travelling adventure back in March I’ve been snappin’ away even more than usual. My latest photos are taken in picture perfect Tofino, BC Canada. You can also see some more of my recent photographs taken in Tofino on my lovely friend Emma’s blog kisses and cross stitches  Emma’s new ‘Wanderlust’ feature is bound to inspire anyone with itchy feet to pack their bags and get going. These are a few of my favourite things:

Flowers and classic cars: Everywhere I go I end up hunched over a bush or below a tree photographing flowers or blossom of any kind. I ‘m fairly certain my friends will soon start taking diversions down streets with no flowers so they don’t have to stand there whilst I faff around with my camera squealing at how lovely flowers are. Tofino has tons of pretty flowers on each corner so it’s impossible to resist capturing some of them (sorry Theresa).  My love of classic cars is growing at a rapid pace now that I can actually drive legally. The faded green colour of this vintage beast, I think it’s a 1939 Plymouth Coupe looks so incredible parked up outside the  pale blue garage, swoon.

Ice creams and sitting down: Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream, the greatest invention since sliced bread. I had never tried this flavour of ice cream before I visited Tofino and now I’m hooked. I love ice cream & chocolate & Peanut Butter so all those three things combined is a sure-fire winner. Sitting down in the sun, need I say more? We found this floral sofa at the side of the road after somebody moved house, one of our new friends wanted it for their place so we had a pretty comedy time trying to carry it down the highway. Every time we picked it up we laughed then dropped it again.

Long sunny days walking on the beach, more flowers, fresh fish tacos and loads of sunshine!

Love everyday. Happy Sunday.

THE BIG MAC: Travel- A Day At The Beach, Tofino BC + Valentino Sunglasses…

Happy Weekend everybody. I’m pleased to announce that my new tortoise-shell cats eye Valentino sunglasses arrived this week, so I’ve been sporting them in the glorious Canadian sunshine. We spent the day at the beach today then spent the evening eating delicious Deutsch food cooked for us by our new Deutsch friend Kim. What a treat. Here are a couple of photos from our trip to the beach today. I’m wearing a vintage gingham shirt, new leggings and my new sunglasses. The beaches here in Tofino, BC are completely unspoilt, not a burger van or ice cream parlour in sight.
You can walk for miles along the beach undisturbed. When the sun shines and there’s no wind it feels like you’re on a tropical island. We paddled in the ocean and ate our picnic basking in the heat. Watching eagles sore overhead is like nothing else I’ve ever seen, the are so graceful and majestic.

I have so many beautiful photographs to share as I’ve been clicking away like a maniac,  so I’ll be posting a few lovely Photography posts this coming week, can’t wait to share them. The top photograph was taken by my very talented sister Theresa (thanks Our Terry).

Have a beautiful weekend.

THE BIG MAC: Fashwan- Resort 2013 Chanel & Oscar de la Renta…

I always get really excited when it’s time for the latest runway shows to come out. Resort is one of my favourite times of year as it’s a great indication of what’s to come for the summer season. Here are my two favourite shows, so far:

Lagerfeld’s collection was a gleeful mash-up with hip-hop edge à la his favorite Azealia Banks or M.I.A.and Louis Quatorze’s eighteenth-century court at Versailles, the focal point of a period that history recognizes as France’s last Golden Age, with Louis the Sun King at its pinnacle. Soundmeister Michel Gaubert dubbed the hybrid “Ghetto royale.” He obliged Karl with an M.I.A. track whose refrain, “Live fast, die young/Bad girls do it well”

Lagerfeld combined formal eighteenth-century details, like panniers and fichus, casual twenty-first-century fabrics, chambray, tech denims, even plastics dressed up with frothy lace ruffles and cuffs, and dressed down with gold platform trainers and short shorts. I’ve chosen my four favourite frocks, I love the matching straw boaters and powder coloured wigs. The classic Fit ‘n’ Flare shape of the dresses is right up my street. Lagerfeld said he wanted to create something  frivolous. “Frivolity is a healthy attitude,” he said after the show. “I know people who were saved by frivolity.” Amen to that Karl.

Another display of flattering, feminine loveliness. At the show the program notes announced that the green and white silk sequin baseball T-shirt he sent down the runway with a gingham skirt in billowy tulle and organza would be available for preorder immediately on TheFancy.com. Oscar de la Renta totally embraces social media, I think that this may be a small indication of things to come. Why wait until the garments hit the stores if we could just pre-order them as soon as the show hits the runway? Oscar de la Renta always delivers the classic wardrobe staples in true style, the skirtsuit, the sleeveless day dress, the double-face coat, the perfect pair of high-waisted trousers complete with an abundance of floral delights, embroideries on party dresses to blown-up photo prints on silk tunics and cropped pants. Florals are part of the house repertoire.

I’m looking forward to the Marc Jacobs show.

THE BIG MAC: Film- Revenge Of The Electric Car- The Future Is A Thing Of The Past…

We went to the cinema last night to see a film titled ‘Revenge Of The Electric Car’ now despite the questionable sounding title this was not a B-Movie about an angst fuelled vehicle but a fascinating documentary looking at the future of the electric car industry.

In Revenge of the Electric Car, director Chris Paine takes his film crew behind the closed doors of Nissan, GM, and the Silicon Valley start-up Tesla Motors to chronicle the story of the global resurgence of electric cars. Following the race from the World’s largest car manufacturers to create the most commercially viable electric car. An inspiring piece of film conveying a really positive outlook for the future of electric cars.

When I first heard this documentary was going to be about ‘electric cars’ I immediately thought of those small funny looking things that I’ve seen driving around Mayfair in London, not the most stylish of vehicles (in my opinion). I’ve always wondered why whenever there is a new technology or fabric the design starts to look like some kind of space-age robot. Sure it’s important to push boundaries, design something new, be challenging, I’m just not convinced that folks want to drive metal eggs or dress like the tin man.

(Alice Edeling, tunic and boots in metallic fabric. the Netherlands, late 1960s: ecco futuristic car electric car smart car)

It’s no secret that my dream car is the Chevrolet Bel Air 1956 in cream and red. I’m a sucker for classic design. Everytime I discuss my dream car my Dad shakes his head and tells me that classic cars are ‘real gas guzzlers’. When I’m in the U.S.A I’m always astounded by how many of these real American-made dream machines are abandoned or left to rust in old parking lots or at the roadside. With such classic design aesthetics these cars have been abandoned simply because they are too expensive to fuel and maintain. Now, if these neglected beauties could be converted to electric, surely that would be the best of both Worlds? Classic design using sustainable energy= Ideal combo.

The ‘Revenge Of The Electric Car’ touched upon hybrid cars featuring Reverend Gadget at Left Coast Electronic Inc who converts existing gas-powered cars to full clean electric, including his fine-looking Porsche Roadster. Proving converting existing classic cars to full electric is achievable. It’s just a matter of time until we go electric…(there’s got to be a Bob Dylan joke in there somewhere)

Reverend Gadget at Left Coast Electronic Inc - full clean electric Porsche Roadster hybrid car.

I believe the future is about collaboration between history and technology. Taking what we already have and utilizing new technologies to improve it sustainably. Now, if somebody could order me a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air with electric under the hood that would be just fabulous!

The future’s electric.

THE BIG MAC: Food- Inspirational Chef’s Table At The Pointe Restaurant, Tofino BC.

This weekend has been action packed, at the top of our agenda was celebrating Our Terry’s birthday. Partial to a spot of fine dining, we headed to the Pointe Restaurant for the Inspirational Chef’s Table with guest Chef Lucias Syme of La Quercia, alongside Chef de Cuisine Nicholas Nutting. The Pointe Restaurant kitchen brigade served up freshly caught BC Salmon in an inventive Five Course tasting menu.

We rocked up un-fashionably early giving us a nice amount of time for a celebratory cocktail (or in my case mocktail). Guests were welcomed to the shared table in the Rainforest Section of The Pointe Restaurant at 7:30pm. It was a cosy intimate affair with twelve guests seated together down a long table.

To start we ate Citrus Salmon & Foie Gras Mousse with Onion Preserve and Peppercorn Brioche, sadly I didn’t get a photograph as I was so hungry it’s disappeared before I could get my camera out (!) The onion preserve was delicious and has inspired me to consider making my own. You know how I love to make homemade chutney.

Our second taster plate was Crispy Battered Salmon, Pickled Vegetable Salad with Grain Mustard Aioli. This dish also included Quails eggs, the taste was phenomenal, so light and summery.Salmon Boudin & Smoked Sea Scallop, Buttered Leeks, Puffed Wild Rice, Hon Shimiji Sauce was up next. This was a popular favourite amongst the other guests. With distinct asian influences, the sauce and delicate combination of flavours reminded me of traditional, quality Japanese food. The main course: Spot Prawn Stuffed Salmon, Double Smoked Bacon, Spring Radish, Crepes, Prawn Jus. Easily my favourite dish. I’m a sucker for a classic, the Salmon stuffed with prawns was a new taste sensation, teamed with the more traditional sides made for a real classic dish. The Prawn Jus was pretty mind-blowing too.For dessert we had Tomme de Savoie: ’Grilled Cheese’, Caramalized Honey Ice Cream rhubarb, Walnuts. Our reactions were mixed to this particular dish. I think the combination of something I’d traditionally deem as savoury mixed with ice cream was a little confusing. As I made it to the final mouthful I decided I like it, I think.

Each course was brought out by a team of waiting staff and served in sync. Before we ate the chefs talked us through the ingredients and gave us a little background info on each dish. The company really made the evening special, we met some very interesting and inspiring people who we’ve kept in touch with, so glorious to wash down marvellous food with such inspiring conversations. Overall we found the menu to be original, inventive and delicious. All ingredients were local to British Columbia, as were the suggested wines. What an incredible evening, special thank you to Chef Lucias Syme of La Quercia and Chef de Cuisine Nicholas Nutting for their hard work and imagination.

You can see what I wore for the occasion HERE.

I’m hungry again now.

THE BIG MAC: Travel- Clayquot Island Preserve Annual Open Day, British Columbia, Canada

Once a year Clayquot Island, British Columbia opens its doors to the public to celebrate the May Long Weekend. Clayquot Island lies a few nautical miles from Tofino. Approximately 250 acres of rainforest, sand dunes, beaches and gardens, Clayquot Island is steeped in history. As you reach the island the timber at the dock is carpeted with moss and worn by the sea winds, giving you the feeling it is not accessed very frequently.

Captain Cook arrived in Clayquot Sound in 1776. Every year on or about the 24th May, Queen Victoria’s birthday a celebration was held for all the coastal villages on Clayquot Island. There were sporting event of all kinds held from logging competitions to a great tug-of-war. When I was told about the island preserve I had imagined and over grown, untouched wilderness, the worn timber at the dock was how I had imagined it would be. The biggest surprise I got was when we walked down a woodland path and came to a clearing of the most beautifully kept gardens that wouldn’t look out-of-place in any English stately home.

Many inhabitants have contributed to the rich history of Clayquot Island. In 1923 30 Japanese families immigrated to Canada, many settling on Clayquot Island. The Japanese families intermingled well with the rest of the inhabitants attending schools with the traders families. immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbour, orders came from Ottawa to remove all the Japanese from the coast. It was a very sad time as they rounded them up without notice, their fishing boats were confiscated and nothing remains of their presence on the island but local memories.Eventually, the Island was sold to a series of private owners. A lady named Betty Farmer bought the Island in the 1930′s and ran a successful Lodge & pub for many years. Betty and her sister Jo Bridges are remembered fondly for their gardens and the Rhododendrons they planted together in the 1950′s. The flowers and gardens are kept in the most pristine condition to this day and were quite honestly breathtaking. During the 1950′s author John Steinbeck and his friend marine biologist Ed ‘Doc’ Rickets, both of Cannery Row fame frequented the Island collecting many new specimens off the Clayquot Wharf.Susan Bloom of famous American Department store Bloomingdale’s has been the owner of the Island since 1990 and has turned it into a wildlife refuge. The Island boasts a vast assortment of bird life, river otters, mink, raccoons, osprey, eagles, ravens, deer, cougars, bears and wolves. We meandered through the pretty gardens and stopped for a rest on the tree swing taking in the captivating surroundings. In contrast to the gardens a boardwalk lead down to the untouched woodlands.

The Land Conservancy of British Columbia has registered a conservation covenant on the property covering 70% of the Island meaning the old growth forest will be protected forever. You can walk along the beach right around the island. It’s spectacular the amount of timber that is washed up along the seashore, there are some really unusual pieces of wood that are so inspiring, they make to want to create pieces of furniture and sculptures. Some of the trees here are so huge you could almost live inside of them, this one that looks like a house with a chimney and door at the front caught my eye, looks like something out of a children’s story, who would live in there I wonder?

Strolling along the beach with my feet in the shallow water was blissful. Our new friend Joe actually swam in the ocean, although I wasn’t quite that brave (it is very cold in there!) I did paddle, it’s so calm and peaceful watching the eagles fly above you. There are hundreds of shells and crabs washed up along the beach. I picked up the spiral shell that was a beautiful golden colour inside.

I imagined what it would be like to own Clayquot Island, seeing locals and tourists flock there to celebrate for one day each year. It must be so quiet 364 days of the year. There were plenty of children and adults enjoying the  surroundings, the Island brought such happiness. You could see the exceptional love and care that has gone into maintaining the garden, plants and Island by Head Gardener, Sharon Whalen and Manager, Chris Taylor.

What a remarkable place.

Happy Sunday.

THE BIG MAC: Photography- Martin Parr Q&A At The Wedgewood Museum- Great British Photography…

Photography documenting an era, location or time and space within our culture appeals to me greatly. As I mentioned in my post ‘Simple Tips For Lifestyle Photography’  I love to document everyday life, with digital photography we are able to capture simple moments and details that make up a memory so easily. With such an increase in this style of documentary photography it’s incredible when you discover a photographer with so much style that their images are so easily recognizable. Martin Parr oozes style as he captures icon elements of British culture. Parr’s images are humorous, original and entertaining  with a true nostalgic British feel.

The Wedgwood Museum in Stoke-on-Trent  is proud to present a unique opportunity to hear Martin Parr speak about his amazing career as a documentary photographer, photojournalist and photo book collector. Martin is famous for his photographic projects that take a critical look at aspects of modern life. He has an international reputation as a chronicler of our own age. The doors of the museum will be open from 5.30pm and guests will be able to speak to Martin before and after the talk and enjoy our magnificent museum and collections.

The event starts at 7pm at The Wedgwood Museum, Wedgwood Drive, Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent, ST12 9ER. Tickets cost £5 and include a complimentary drink.

Great photography, complimentary drink and stimulating, inspiring discussions, what could be more fun? If you’re in that neck of the woods you should defo get yourself down there. If you’re not lucky enough to make it to the event Martin Parr’s website is great and has a whole host of excellent photography from his portfolio.

You can book your tickets for this special event at : The Wedgewood Museum

THE BIG MAC: Travel- Summer BBQ, Sister Beach Style & Blue Cheese Salad, Tofino Canada

The sun has been beating down here in Tofino BC this week. I should interject at this point to say that the internet connection for our part of the island has been down, hence the distinct lack of internet action from Big Mac H.Q. In our darkest internet free hour we distracted ourselves with food, of course. Our homegrown Canadian buddy Nick fired up the BBQ for a summer feast fit for a King. Warning: the following images may offend vegetarian readers. On the menu was BBQ Chicken Wings, Zucchini (British translation= courgette) and fresh Corn on the Cob.Accompanied by the most delicious Blue Cheese & Walnut Salad with Ranch Dressing and side of Garlic Bread. The Garlic bread was delicious, although I only had a nibble as wheat and me dont always mix so well. Since arriving in Canada it has become apparent that the Canadians really do know how to bake. There are bakeries on almost every corner with the most fantastic freshly baked produce from Cinnamon Swirls to bread. As our internet connection is still down the only place in town to be connected is the bakery, so I simply had to order myself a Dark Chocolate muffin and London Fog and sit myself down to answer my lovely emails. If you’ve started a new blog or found my post on ‘Tips For Starting A Blog’ useful or inspiring, I’d really love to hear from you. You can get in touch with Me at thebigmacblog@gmail.com

As the temperature is rising and high summer is fast approaching our wardrobe choices have been somewhat beach orientated. As I mentioned previously ‘Our Terry’ has been flaunting her new Aija Maxi dress from Anthropolgie with beat up vintage Levis denim jacket in true seventies sister beach style. She loves her Aija Maxi dress so much she went an ordered it in the second print option! It’s such a simple maxi dress style, easy to throw on and the tropical print gives the impression you’ve made an effort when actually you’ve just woken up and thrown it on, you also have the liberating option of going sans underwear, which is always a bonus right? TMI?
